6.1. Sources of Information and Data Quality Control
Sources of information for this section included geographical location data for the various Hot Spots relative to different features within the river basin, including downstream distance from the Hot Spot to the national boundary. Information concerning recreational areas and their utilization, development of commercial and recreational fisheries were derived from water utilization records of the water bodies. Data concerning sickness rates were obtained from information bulletins of State sanitary-hygienic inspectors which are published annually in each region of the Russian Federation. A considerable amount of information was obtained from the questionnaires completed by enterprise water consumers.
Data quality control was carried out on the basis of information obtained from the questionnaires filled out by Hot Spot representatives and on the basis of assessments made by National Experts working within the framework of UNDP-GEF Programme in those oblasts of Russian Federation where the selected “short listed” 15 Hot Spots are located.
