6.1. Sources of Information and Data Quality Control

Special questionnaires were designed in order to collect basic data to complete the scoring sheets for water quality and human health issues (see Section 3 -  Methodology).  The questionnaires were sent to municipal and rayon inspectors for natural resources and environmental protection of the cities of Minsk, Retchitsa, Gomel, Mogilev, Borisov, Bobruisk, Svetlogorsk, Bereza, Orsha, Pinsk, Zhlobin, Soligorsk and Slutsk.  Data from the questionnaires were used in the preparation of the scoring sheets.  Data from field studies downstream of the discharges from wastewater treatment facilities of the cities of Gomel, Retchitsa and “Mozyrsky petroleum refinery” were also used to complete the scoring sheets. In addition to this data, the national experts also took into subjective information provided by local specialists.

The locations of the points of discharges from the wastewater treatment facilities of the enterprises included in the preliminary list of Hot Spots are shown in Fig. B1 – B14 (Annex B).

In assessing the impact of the Hot Spots on water quality and human health, the experts used the official data from government ministries and departments, relevant subordinated institutions of the Republic of Belarus as well as officially published textual and cartographic materials and current scientific research. As a result, the data used in this section corresponds present-day level of information about the Dnipro River basin in the territory of Belarus.
